Prospects for the Chip-Card Market in Canada: 2000 (Syndicated Research)

This syndicated market research study was first published by TSI in 2000. It examines prospects for chip-card based systems in Canada, based on in-depth research into each of the key emerging market segments.  Forecasts, covering a five-year timeframe, were developed for each segment by card type, technology and application.

Executive interviews were conducted with current and potential users, suppliers, integrators and developers of chip-card technology.  This was supported by extensive desk research, based in part on the Canadian Card News database that has been established by TSI over the past ten years. The majority of key players in the industry participated in the study by providing us with market information, and by contributing their valuable insights into key issues and how the market was likely to develop. The final report was made available to organizations on a subscription basis. It represents the most complete and comprehensive study of this market conducted in Canada to date.

A description of the 2007 study can be found here.

Chip-cards,
smart cards
A chip-card is a plastic card, typically the size of a credit card, that has a semiconductor integrated circuit (chip) embedded in it. The integrated circuit could be either semiconductor memory, or a microprocessor chip. In cases where a microprocessor chip is embedded in the card, the card is referred to as a smart card

Worldwide demand for chip cards is expected to be in excess of 6 billion units in 2005, with memory cards used in payphones making up the bulk of shipments. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to account for more than a third of worldwide demand.
